The Multi-Tasking Momma: Starting Purees

Starting Purees

We've started food and purees these past couple of weeks! It is so much fun and I cant wait until they really start enjoying it!

After their 4 month old check up, the doctor told me I could start giving them food. Really? I thought we should wait until 6 months? He said that since they were both doing so great there's no harm to start introducing certain foods. He told me to start by giving them oatmeal. I figured I would put it in the bottle but he told me to make it and spoon feed it to them so they could get use to eating off of a spoon! So, that night we tried oatmeal! JP loved it but Jocelynn didn’t know what to think..

We tried it again the next day and I let them play with their spoons and have fun! Jocelynn liked it this way much better;)

We had to get in the bath right after but we had so much fun.. can you tell? After a week of oatmeal, I introduced rice to them. Jocelynn loved the rice but JP not so much!

We went to Buy Buy Baby this past weekend and I purchased a baby bullet! I've always known I wanted to make their food and I was so excited to get home and read everything! We've been on oatmeal and rice for about 3 weeks now so we decided it was time to introduce a veggie! Sweet potatoes ended up being our first choice..

*One sweet Potato *Two cups water

Boil the sweet potato until very soft and smushy

Put the sweet potato in a blender or baby bullet (whatever you have) and add one cup of the water that you used for boiling the potato! (The water left in the pan has all the vitamins and nutrients from the potato) Then blend!

And voila! You have your very first homemade baby food! I LOVE everything that comes with the baby bullet! There are 6 jars that come with numbers on them so you can remember the date you made them. Oh, and by the way ONE sweet potato makes SIX jars!! Why wouldn’t you make your own baby food? It saves money!

Now.. lets see how the babies like sweet potatoes..

Honestly, I wanted them to love it so much they would eat everything! But that didn’t happen! They still aren't use to textures but they did like it! Since it didn’t go great I decided to cook them some oatmeal and add in the puree. They loved it with the oatmeal and even got full from it! We are going to continue with sweet potatoes for the next few days and then introduce squash this weekend!

A few things to remember when you start baby food-

  • Always use the 3-5 day rule! You need to feed them the same food for 3-5 days in a row to make sure no allergic reactions appear and if they are fine after a few days you can introduce another flavor.
  • Never add salt or any other flavorings. I know.. you think how good could it be? But babies kidneys are very small and they cant handle sodium as well as we can.
  • When starting food, introduce it to them on half-full bellies. I always give it to them an hour after a bottle. Once they start liking it and they do better with it then eventually a bottle will be replaced by a veggie/fruit.
  • Have FUN with it! If you are stressed out the baby will be stressed out! So get them naked and let them have a good time and you'll be able to enjoy it too!

Hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday!

They are so cute!!!
All 3 of my kids started shortly after 4 months-the peds all recommend the 4-6 month range again!
I've made all of my baby food for Lily using just a blender, ice cube trays, and ziploc bags. If you need any recipes, let me know!

Adorable! I wanted to mention that it's okay to put seasoning in baby food! Definitely skip anything with salt, but herbs are totally ok... and it makes it so much more tasty for them! I might wait a little longer, since they are so young to be starting solids anyway, but it'll give them more variety once they get a bit older!

I love making my own baby food!! It is so much fun. We are into making puree combos now that they are eating a variety of food. My latest one is fresh spinach, banana and mango! They love it and will eat a huge bowl between the two of them (7 month old GG twins.) Cute pictures of your little ones too! Good to know that I'm not the only one that thinks babies covered in purees are super cute :)
